North Canterbury comprises the Waimakariri and Hurunui Districts and is bordered by the Southern Alps on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east.

The Waimakariri District is situated north of the Waimakariri River; it has land area of about 225,000 hectares and 13 kilometres of sandy beaches. The main towns are Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Woodend and Oxford.

The Hurunui District is north of the Waimakariri District, starting at the town of Leithfield, and extending to the Conway River south of the Kaikoura Peninsula.  The main towns are Amberley, Cheviot, Culverden and Hanmer Springs. Hurunui has a land area of  864,640 hectares.
